Piece Description
A one-hour radio documentary that tells the story of a major jazz label with a maverick spirit. In the 1960s, saxophonist John Coltrane took his music to another level. Impulse Records came of age. So did America. Nearly forty years after Coltrane's death, the new wave in jazz is STILL on Impulse. Ebony. Orange. Black. Fire. Welcome to "The House That Trane Built." Featuring: Ray Charles Alan Bergman Alice Coltrane Archie Shepp Ashley Kahn Bob Thiele Charlie Haden Chico Hamilton Creed Taylor Don Heckman Ed Michel Freddie Hubbard Gary Giddins Larry Coryell Michael Cuscuna Hosted by Saul Williams Saul Williams is considered a powerful voice of the hip hop generation as a poet, actor, and rapper. He is widely known for his blend of spoken work poetry and hip-hop and for his leading role in the independent film, Slam. His most recent work is The Dead Emcee Scrolls (2006). He has enjoyed Impulse recordings for many years.

Review of The House That Trane Built"The House That Trane Built" is a rare treat, offering listeners an intimate and polished portrait of the musical genius of John Coltrane. The deep berry richness of host Saul Williams' voice is the perfect complement to this retrospective piece. Each note reminded me of why the music of John Coltrane remains timeless. As I listened, I fell in love with Trane all over again! "The House That Trane Built" is destined to become a classic both for Coltrane aficionados as well as for the newly baptized. |

Review of The House That Trane Built
"House" serves as a very good introduction to the art of jazz music of the 1960s.
