From: Jennifer Dunn
Length: 00:03:17

Dapo Abo sings one of his traditional mountain songs to the accompaniment of the ocean for the first time. Read the full description.

Mtclouds_small Dapo Abo is of the Naxi Ethnic Minority, a group of people with a unique culture and language that reside in the sky-searing mountains ranges of Yunnan province, southwestern China. He and his family are some of the few that continue to study and perform Naxi traditional mountain songs. Dapo is currently a student at Central University of the Nationalities in Beijing. He recently visited Hawaii with a group of classmates, all representatives of China's 55 Minority Nationalities, led here by their professors to perform their unique 'native' songs and dances. During his free time one evening, Dapo asked to record one of his traditional mountain songs with the "voice of the ocean" behind him. Dapo is eager to share his heritage with new audiences, and partake in discussions about how economic development can be reconciled with cultural preservation.

Review of Dapo Sings on Waikiki

I loved this piece. The rhythms and cadences of the Naxi mountain song are absolutely hypnotic. Yes, there is no explanation and no narration, but I liked that. So often pieces are overexplained. This would be an easy choice for programming concerning cultural preservation.

Review of Dapo Sings on Waikiki

For 3:17, you won't hear a word of English, and even as I write this, I am torn by a sense that I should be aware of what Dapo is singing about, where the Naxi come from, and so on. But the sheer oomph of his singing is great.

Presenters might talk in and around the piece without doing too much harm if they were to get more info about Dapo, the Naxi, and the content of the song.
