Piece Description

It used to be that hitting the slot machines or trying your hand at a game of Blackjack meant a trip to Vegas or Atlantic City. Within the last decade, many forms of gambling, the Lottery, Touch Play, televised poker and online gambling - have joined America's mainstream. Move over Baseball! America has a new favorite pastime. Gambling venues are re-fashioning themselves as family-friendly entertainment centers and are quickly spreading across the nation. The state of Iowa currently has 17 licensed casinos - and the numbers are growing - so much so, that some residents are beginning to call Iowa "The Nevada of the Midwest." You can find gambling at your local convenience store or you can put your money down on a game of "Texas Hold'em" right on your personal computer. Gambling has moved in next door and into our homes. Is gambling the latest trend in economic development or is the state mortgaging its future away on gambling? This short news clip was featured on WSUIs daily call-in program Talk of Iowa, which covered gambling expansion in Iowa and asks the question, "What happens to a small rural community when a mega-casino takes up residence." The Riverside project is part of a larger Graduate project at the University of Iowa, covering state sponsored gambling expansion. A total of 22 stories were written covering this topic.
