Piece Description
Tango is the musical expression of Argentina's immigrant history. Cuban Habanera and African rhythms mixed with polkas and waltzes in the late 1800s, when thousands of immigrants came to Buenos Aires. The un-initiated may think that tango is just a dance. But beyond the physical movement, there is a voice. Maria Volont? is a tango singer from Buenos Aires. She mixes tango with everything, from jazz and pop to boleros and bossa nova. She won the Gardel Prize (Argentina's version of the Grammy) for best female tango vocalist in 2004. In this non-narrated piece, Maria talks about her music, the 'tango woman' and her love of Portuguese fado.

Review of Maria Volonte: Tango Singer
An in-depth dissertation on the musical history of the tango it's not, but the piece gives a good impression of one artist's passion for an art form that is synonymous for seduction. It reminded me of the extent to which our largely Protestant western cultures have lost touch with the sensuality that seems so very natural in many non western art forms. The music we hear here is an expression of a culture that seems so close to ours but is far from the stiff embarrassment which we offer at anything that smacks of voluptuousness. It makes me want to rush out and buy the cd.
