- A tale of seven dwarves
- From
- Drew Leifheit
The story you're about to hear is about a family of seven dwarves. While it's not exactly a fairytale, surprisingly this story has a somewhat happy ending despite the fact that the protagonists' lives were touched by the Holocaust. The story of the Ovics family, Hasidic Hungarian speaking Jews who were from a village in today's Romania, is one of show business, medical research and starting life anew in another country. The book that tells their tale is called 'In Our Hearts We Were Giants'. One of its authors, Eilat Negev, was recently here in Budapest to speak about the book, which has recently been published in Hungarian.
The music you'll hear in this report was played by the Budapest band Di Naye Kapelye whose leader is ethnomusicologist Bob Cohen, an American of Hungarian Jewish descent. The tunes the band performed were the same ones played by the Ovics family in their on-stage performances.
