Piece Description

A few years ago, Chicago writer David Kodeski found two diaries from 1960 and 1961 in a resale shop. The diaries' author, a single, working woman who lived on the Chicago's South Side, wrote meticulously about her everyday life: how she flirted with her co-workers, fought with her Dad, shopped for things she didn't need, and searched for happiness as she worried about her weight and hairdo: November 9 "Another lousy day. I wore my blue suit with the pleated skirt and looked sharp. Mike looked but ignored me again and I'm getting so disgusted. I don't care anymore. Besides my other admirer has been around. He came first thing in the morning, unfortunately when Zoya and I were having an argument. But, he talked to me for quite a while --this time we discussed house plants etc. He sure is nice but I wish he was a little older. At last break when I went into the cafeteria he asked me to sit at his table which was filled with fellows and he held out and pushed in my chair. Ate like a pig when I got home." Kodeski bought the diaries, took them home, and began to read. The result: a one-man show called "Another Lousy Day," detailing his quest to find the diary's author. He and producers Elizabeth Meister and Dan Collison, in association with Chicago Public Radio, adapted the show to radio. Diana Slickman reads the diary entries. First broadcast on Chicago Public Radio and on All Things Considered in 2003.

Review of Another Lousy Day

The title and premise grabbed me. Found diaries in a thrift shop! How much longer will it be possible to find diaries at thrift shops with the advent of the computer and internet blogs? Sherlock Holmes and pre-Bridget Jones's Diary combined. Production is great. I enjoyed listening to Kodeski's bemused voice and Slickman's sometimes sardonic renderings of the diary entries. History at its most personal. Dare I say it's a modern day version of Samuel Pepy's diaries. Soundtracks from movies and time period add to the piece. The late fifties and early sixties come back with a vengeance. Seventeen minutes of great radio. Thank you.

Review of Another Lousy Day

Nice work. Excellent basis for the piece, talk about 'lost and found sound'. Only questions I have would be regarding the use of non-incidental music (Doris, and Elvis), not sure they were absolutely necessary. Also the ending somehow left me hanging, although the story had closure, the piece seemed to end to abruptly-maybe I wanted to know more about how the author felt about the whole episode, maybe it's just me. Otherwise, thoroughly enjoyable, engaging, and well executed.

HOST INTRO:

Picture your precious family heirlooms... a diary, perhaps, like this one. Picture them as an object of mysterious origin in a resale store, with a yellow pricetag reading five dollars.

A few years ago writer David Kodeski was rummaging through an antique store on Chicago's North side when he came across two diaries from 1960 and 1961. He bought them, took them home, and began to read. The result: a one-man show called Another Lousy Day, detailing his quest to find the diary's author. He and producers Elizabeth Meister and Dan Collison, in association with Chicago Public Radio, adapted the show to radio. Diana Slickman reads the diary entries.
