ABC Radio National’s Features Unit comprises three weekly program slots; 360 Documentaries (http://www.abc.net.au/rn/360), Hindsight (http://www.abc.net.au/rn/hindsight) and Into the Music (http://www.abc.net.au/rn/intothemusic). Each of them showcases highly crafted audio programs which open a window on the experiences of people around the world, examine culture, society and ideas, and offer a window on the past, and its relationship to the present. The Features Unit is distinctive on Radio National, for its sophisticated approach to the audio story form, and has developed a reputation, among its international peers, for its adventurous and innovative productions. Each of these feature program slots has an average audience of around 30,000 listeners – with a sizeable podcasting audience, both domestic and international [some programs cannot be made available as podcasts, due to copyright restrictions]. The Features Unit has developed a loyal and committed domestic audience in Australia, and via the web, is extending its listener reach exponentially.

Hindsight and 360Docs are available as streamed audio online and, depending on content in each individual feature, is made available to download as podcast audio. As indicated, the online audio component around each program can vary, and is negotiable in regard to purchased audio content. We would like to consider the prospect of offering our audiences audio both on-air and on-line, as we consider this valuable, and important, in helping to grow audiences for all programs, so would be looking to negotiate, on a case-by-case, based on this intention. Radio National has led the way with podcast audio in Australia, and therefore we consider it advantageous, when negotiating with fellow program makers via PRX, to address the question of online availability, and discuss payment options accordingly. We are passionate about offering our audiences the breadth of audio feature and program content from around the world, and are keen to foster and develop stronger relationships with independent producers, and other public broadcasting organisations internationally.
Your production may be selected for airplay in one of these specific feature program slots; the relevant Executive Producer of each of these slots will be the first point of contact, in discussing ABC RN’s interest in your work.
NOTE: We will want to be able to edit for both slot length and comprehension (to take into account the background and knowledge of Australian listeners). We would not undertake a major edit (e.g., extracting one element of a feature) without consulting the journalist directly.
We might also ask the journalist to retake some of his/her voice track, in which case we would factor in any additional production work as part of the overall agreed fees. We might – on occasion – wish to work with the journalist to remix the package, in which case we would work directly with him or her to do so.
* As ABC Radio National has led the way with the provision of online audio in Australia, and have built a sizeable audience for our web content, we would make the program we license available as streamed audio – for a limited period, or as per negotiation with the producer/production team/stake holder.
