Basetrack is an independent, civilian experimental media project, and its forward crew was embedded with 1st battalion 8th Marines in 2010 and 2011. We were transmitting sights and sounds from Helmand, Afghanistan, and tracking a thousand Marines who were tasked with implementing the new counterinsurgency strategy in America's longest war. The rest of the Basetrack team works the web from around the planet to track regional news and relevant information and to support the forward crew.
Basetrack was funded by a 2010 Newschallenge Grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. It is not owned, or operated by the U.S. Marine Corps, or the U.S. Department of Defense.
