Reversioning Deux

All the details for 2007.

Dust off your archives. Open your audio vaults. Take another look at your radio pieces and imagine them...

REVERSIONED!

Welcome to the PRX Reversioning Project (Part Deux).

Deadline is Monday February 5, 2007.

Last year we conducted the first PRX Reversioning Project and brought back to life more than 20 radio pieces in forms and formats that stations are asking for. Among them:

>> Behind the Comedy: Thirty Years of Duck's Breath Mystery Theater
>> John Rudolph's Stories from the NYPD
>> The DNA Files
>> The Return of HEAT (Coming in 2007)
>> Waves of Change, Rivers of Doubt: Global Water Issues and Solutions from the National Radio Project

There are thousands of radio pieces like these sitting on shelves and forgotten folders on your hard drive right now that are beyond the reach of stations and listeners seeking high-quality, relevant programming. Much of this work simply needs a bit of polish, an update, some edits to be ready for broadcast or online use.

PRX is offering direct support to producers and stations interested in reversioning existing material for distribution through PRX.

INTERESTED? READ ON.

What can be reversioned?

Reversioning can apply to lots of radio projects. For example:

>> Older or archival works that require digitizing, editing, updating and/or improvement
>> Radio documentaries and long-form projects that need to be reworked to accommodate news holes and cutaways
>> Reworking archival material for timeliness
>> Adapting existing work for digital distribution via podcasting
>> "Evergreening" work that could find a home but for a few dated references
>> Packaging of long-form interviews or outtakes
>> Creating new intros and promos for past work
>> Remixing pieces that have aired nationally and can now be redistributed

What is PRX trying to achieve with reversioning?

The PRX Reversioning project is designed to:

>> Ensure that the best public radio work is available and ready for air
>> Close the 'last mile' gap for excellent work that needs updating to become usable by stations
>> Uncover hidden audio gems---archives, interviews, outtakes, raw audio for others to edit and air
>> Experiment with new digital distribution opportunities
>> Encourage experienced producers to rethink their previous work and update it for current use
>> Reversion material - long pieces, for example - into modules, spots or fundraising promos; or short pieces and series into a single long form program or special

The Money Part

>> Proposals up to $5,000 will be considered, but please note that we encourage smaller proposals starting at $500.
>> An initial 50% payment will be made for each approved proposal and the second 50% after the work has been made public on PRX.

Requirements

Stations and producers must be paid PRX members to participate; non-members may apply but must commit to joining PRX if funding is awarded (and sorry, no, the PRX Reversioning Project funding cannot be used to pay for PRX membership, but membership is very reasonable!).

Successful applicants must:

>> Help PRX build awareness for the show through emails, phone calls and through PRX and other online forums
>> Create at least one audio promo and host-script.
>> Post the program on PRX
>> Credit PRX and the Reversioning Project within all programs and in ancillary material and other media where the program appears.

Those who are rewarded PRX Reversioning support:

>> Must produce and post the agreed upon program to PRX before the end of 2007 OR
>> At a mutually agreeable date in 2007 timed for maximum station interest
>> Post at least one photo/graphic related to the program on PRX
>> Post a transcript with the program
>> Agree to refund the Reversioning support if the program is not completed as mutually agreed.

Qualities of a Successful Proposal

>> Relevance - priority will be given to proposals that help give stations context for using the work
>> Consideration of current market standards and station needs
>> Respect for network clocks and how stations now evaluate and select acquired programs
>> High editorial standards
>> Evergreen-ness/shelf-life
>> Uniqueness or importance of a particular unavailable work
