In May 2017, middle school students at Gus Garcia Young Men's Leadership Academy worked with Texas Folklife producers to create a series of personal stories. This summer high school students and middle school or high school teachers and administrators participatd in Texas Folklife's 2015 “Stories from Deep in the Heart" Summer Institute, a 5-day intensive fellowship in audio documentary production with professional producers, journalists and cultural workers. Participants were guided through production of short audio documentaries on themes related to folklife----family and community traditions.

Stories from Deep in the Heart completed a semester residency in Ms. Karydas' enrichment class and last Friday we listened to the final stories. The students successfully crafted audio documentaries about Martin Middle School and the surrounding neighborhood. Topics ranged from volleyball to ghosts, to Flea Markets-the students were surprised when they realized Ms. Karydas had invited the principal along with several other classes to the "listening" party. Full-Library and all we wrapped up another semester of Stories!
